LANSING, Mich. (Jan. 21, 2025) — Yesterday, Sen. Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing) joined the Capital Area Housing Partnership (CAHP) to welcome residents as they moved into their new homes during the inaugural move-in day at the newly transformed Walter French school building.
Sen. Anthony shared her thoughts on the day:
“I’m thrilled to see people moving into The Residences at Walter French. This project is about more than just providing housing for folks in Lansing — it’s about creating access to the critical resources and support people need to build better futures. By transforming the historic school into apartments, this project offers much needed affordable housing while preserving a piece of the city’s history. Thank you to the Capital Area Housing Partnership for their incredible work, and to all of the local elected leaders who helped make this day a reality.”
The former junior high school has been renovated into affordable housing units designed to support income-constrained families, while also featuring two floors of commercial space that will include a child care center and a community resource center. Thanks in part to $5 million in Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) program funding Sen. Anthony helped secure while serving as a state representative in 2022, CAHP broke ground on this project in June 2023.
Sen. Anthony believes every Michigander deserves a secure place to call home, which is why she introduced the Tenant Empowerment Package aimed at strengthening tenants’ rights across the state.
