LANSING, Mich. (Feb. 6, 2024) — Sen. Rosemary Bayer (D-West Bloomfield) issued the following statement on the “Dept. of Government Efficiency’s” dangerous move to access personal data and thanks AFL-CIO and other labor groups for their lawsuit to try to stop it. Sen. Bayer (D-West Bloomfield) has been the personal victim of a private data breach and has led the charge in the Legislature to strengthen state laws on protecting personal data and consumers’ rights.
“Our federal government has invited people who do not have security clearance to access and use our private data, breeching millions of Michiganders’ private data, including bank accounts and medical information, without our permission or any background in handling top-security information. We are all at risk of financial insecurity, identity theft and more as the federal information security protections are no longer in effect.
“The federal government is continuing to take new actions daily that hurt people in Michigan, the country, and the world. I want to thank our champion fighters the AFL-CIO and allied labor organizations for taking immediate legal action to protect all of us from this and future potentially devasting loss of our personal and financial protections.”
