Led by Sen. Santana, proposal invests in public health, Medicaid access, and relief for Michiganders

LANSING, Mich. (May 1, 2025) — Today, the Michigan Senate Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Appropriations Subcommittee, chaired by Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit), voted to advance a people-centered budget proposal to the full Senate Appropriations Committee. The budget prioritizes the health, well-being, and economic stability of Michigan families during a time of growing concern over federal attacks on critical health care programs.

“While crafting this proposal, I remained focused on what truly matters: uplifting Michiganders and ensuring that their health is front and center,” said Sen. Santana. “Now more than ever, people deserve to know that when they are sick, the resources and care they need will be there. Senate Democrats are picking up the slack left by the reckless actions of Trump and his enablers. This budget lays the groundwork for a healthier, stronger, and more secure Michigan.”

The Senate Democrats’ DHHS budget proposal includes targeted investments to ensure health equity and long-term wellness across the state, including:

  • Expanding Rx Kids to provide direct financial assistance to new mothers and babies.
  • Providing medical debt relief and reducing the crushing burden it places on thousands of residents.
  • Maintaining Medicaid investments while helping Michiganders keep their coverage and save money.
As Trump and his Republican allies continue to undermine Medicaid and critical public health investments at both the federal and state levels, Senate Democrats are stepping in to protect access to care.

The proposal now heads to the full Senate Appropriations Committee for further consideration.
