While Senate EGLE budget invests in Michigan soil, water, and air quality, House plan eliminates critical resources to strengthen public health and environment

LANSING, Mich. (Aug. 27, 2025) — Nearly two months past the deadline, House Republicans finally passed their state budget proposal yesterday — a plan that would decimate resources for hospitals and health care, public safety, education, and so many other important priorities for Michigan residents. As Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for the Michigan Dept. of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Sen. Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) released the following statement on the House budget plan for this department:

“By slashing the funding and the staff meant to protect Michigan’s air and water, this irresponsible budget puts our health at risk and endangers the Pure Michigan that we love today and that we hope to leave in good shape for the future.”
