LANSING, Mich. (Aug. 27, 2025) — House Republicans finally passed their destructive, egregious budget plan yesterday, long after the statutory July 1 deadline. Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) has released the following statement on House Republicans’ budget, which proposes drastic cuts to vital health and human services Michiganders depend on, including Medicaid, family food assistance programs, supportive housing, water affordability, mental health services, and support for people experiencing homelessness.
“House Republicans’ proposed cuts to the MDHHS budget would have catastrophic consequences for the health and well-being of over 3 million Michiganders. These reductions would hurt our seniors, children, women, and people with disabilities in ways that are simply unacceptable,” said Chair Santana. “We need a budget that reflects compassion, common sense, and a commitment to public health. I urge my House counterparts to reconsider these decisions as we move forward in this process. The people of Michigan deserve better.”
Months ago, Chair Santana and Senate Democrats successfully passed a fiscally responsible budget that fully funds MDHHS, equipping the department with the resources needed to improve the health, well-being, and economic security of Michigan families.
