LANSING, Mich. (Oct. 3, 2025) — Today, Senate Democrats passed a bipartisan budget to fund Michigan K-12 schools and higher educational institutions. Included are critical investments in students’ education, safety, and well-being to ensure they have the best chance possible at a bright future. This agreement comes after Senate Democrats spent months advocating for a strong education budget and ultimately delivers on major priorities like free school meals, record per-pupil funding, and added support for students with greater needs.
“From the very start of a child’s education all the way through graduation and beyond, this budget makes sure every young Michigander has a fair shot to thrive and build a future right here at home,” said Sen. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on K-12. “This wasn’t easy. Republicans tried to play politics with our kids’ futures. But we fought back and won. With record funding for classrooms, free school meals protected, real support for educators, and targeted resources for the students who need it most, we’re showing what’s possible when we put people before politics and refuse to back down.”
The school aid budget contains the highest-ever foundational allowance of $10,050 per student, giving school districts greater ability to address local needs. During negotiations, Senate Democrats also successfully secured funding for at-risk students, special education programs, and rural and isolated districts to ensure those who require additional support in the classroom can access it. These dollars are essential for closing opportunity gaps and ensuring every child, regardless of their zip code, has the resources they need to thrive — and were a focal point for the Senate Democratic Majority throughout discussions.

In addition to historic funding for K-12 schools, other highlights from the school aid budget include:

The continuation of the widely popular free school meals program, which ensures students can learn on full bellies, while helping parents save an average $850 per year.

Increased investment in funding for students and schools that need extra support, such as at-risk students, English-language learners, special education programs, and rural and isolated districts.

Additional funding for literacy supports, building on Senate Democrats’ legislative efforts to strengthen learning based on the science of reading; and

Critical investments in school safety and student mental health to modernize security systems and hire more counselors, social workers, and school resource officers.

Efforts to encourage smaller class sizes and better learning environments for students and teachers.

Increased funding to all Michigan universities and community colleges.
