This past weekend, the Shorewood Kiwanis Club of MI hosted another outstanding back-to-school event — making sure local kids have the clothes and resources they need to tackle the new academic year ahead.

Funding our police and our schools should not be a partisan debate. Michigan families are counting on us to deliver, and in the Senate, we’ve taken that duty seriously.
We’ve made sure OK2SAY — our state’s confidential student safety tipline — remains funded and operational. And with the Michigan State Police reporting a record number of tips last year, it’s clear how vital this program is to keeping students safe.
Back in May, my Senate colleagues and I passed a budget proposal that continues funding for OK2SAY and puts an additional $350 million behind other efforts to improve school safety and mental health. However, these dollars remain tied up as House Republicans have failed to put forward a complete budget of their own and refuse to negotiate one in good faith. It’s time we get this done — for Michigan students and their families.
