Legislative Updates

Lowering Prescription Drug Costs for Michiganders Senate Bills 3-5

We’re one step closer to lowering prescription drug costs across the state. The Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) legislation was passed by the Senate and is now in the hands of the House. This bill would create an independent board to review and set upper payment limits on high-cost prescription drugs, helping rein in costs and improve access for patients.

Modernizing Michigan’s Cosmetology Licensing Senate Bill 130

Our bill to update cosmetology licensing standards has officially passed the Senate and is headed to the House. This legislation brings Michigan in line with national best practices and reduces unnecessary barriers for aspiring beauty professionals — making it easier to launch a career in the industry.

Introducing the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Tax Credit Senate Bill 235

Aligning with the vision we outlined in the Clean Energy Future plan, I’m excited to work alongside colleagues across the aisle and across the chamber on legislation to create a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production plan. By establishing an income tax credit for the producers and blenders of SAF — an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional jet fuel — our legislation supports our state’s farmers and economy while reducing our carbon footprint.

Ensuring Justice for Survivors of Sexual Assault Senate Bills 257-261

I’m a proud sponsor of the “Justice for Survivors” bill package, which would extend the statute of limitations for sexual assault and strengthen protections for survivors. Introduced by my colleague Senator Kevin Hertel, this legislation passed out of the Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety this past week and now awaits consideration before the full Senate. This progress represents an important step toward accountability, healing, and justice for survivors across Michigan.

Protecting Consumers from Corporate Greed — Senate Bill 134

Yesterday, I testified in front of the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, & Consumer Protection in support of my bill, Senate Bill 134. This legislation would restore the Michigan Attorney General’s ability to take action against businesses that engage in deceptive, unfair, and exploitative practices. By reinstating these critical consumer safeguards, this legislation will help ensure that Michigan residents are treated fairly and that corporations are held accountable for deceitful activities.

The Refugee Development Center’s Youth Mentoring Program

we welcomed students from the Refugee Development Center’s youth mentoring program to the Capitol

Last month, we welcomed students from the Refugee Development Center’s youth mentoring program to the Capitol. They toured the building, learned more about how our state government works, and asked Sen. Sarah Anthony and me questions they had. I love opportunities to engage with youth and organizations who are doing such important work in the community such as Lansing’s Refugee Development Center. They’ve long been a vital community hub connecting new Americans to educational opportunities and essential resources.

New Sweepstakes Opportunity for First-Time FAFSA Filers

To encourage Michiganders who are enrolling in college for the first time to take advantage of financial aid opportunities available through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid — commonly known as the FAFSA — Gov. Whitmer recently announced the Ticket to Tuition FAFSA sweepstakes. This new statewide contest offers a chance for forty first-time FAFSA filers to win $10,000 and ten winners to receive $50,000.

The FAFSA is an important tool for students to lower the cost of college, helping them take advantage of valuable tuition savings opportunities like the Michigan Achievement Scholarship and Community College Guarantee, programs that my Senate Democratic colleagues and I have proudly supported in recent years.

Contest details:

  • To enter the sweepstakes, complete the FAFSA online or by submitting a paper form and text CASH to 855-50K-TICKET by 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2025. To be eligible, participants must be Michigan residents who completed the FAFSA for the first-time to use during the 2025-26 academic year.
  • Prizes will be awarded in Michigan Education Savings Program accounts, which can be used for a variety of qualified educational expenses such as tuition and fees, living expenses, and computers and textbooks.
